Dine Your Way Through Uptown

Uptown Port Alberni expands from our divine oceanfront Harbour Quay, up Argyle, past City Hall and all that in between. Also known to some as the core or heart of our Valley, Uptown has gone through an amazing metamorphosis over the last few years, welcoming  some fabulous new eateries amongst the classic Alberni favourites. Whether you are in the mood for tacos and carnitas, schnitzels and cabbage or a hearty breakfast, Uptown has a spot for all tastebuds.

Little Bavaria – Little Bavaria is not only one of Port Alberni’s longest standing restaurants, but one of the all-time favourites in the community. For 55 years, Little B has been serving the Valley and tourists German cuisine with a local touch. Most dishes including schnitzels, soups, spätzle, cabbage and more are all in-house made from scratch. Aside from providing delicious food and unique dining experience, Little Bavaria prides itself on supporting other local establishments and sourcing as many things as they can directly from Port Alberni. Ingredients and proteins are locally sourced from staple providers in town such as Double R Meats, Pete’s Mountain Meats, Coombs Country Candy, and Circle Dairy.  As ownership has transformed over the years, each owner has fully invested in keeping recipes and experiences as they have always been, which keeps people coming back time and time again. Reservations are likely needed to get into Little B so be sure to plan ahead for this meal.

The Broken Bow – The Harbour Quays newest brunch addition. Specializing in delicious breakfast dishes, the Broken Bow’s menu is 100% gluten free and a great option for those with dietary restrictions. Almost every menu item is made from scratch including sauces and batters with the goal of staying Port Alberni and Island local when purchasing ingredients. Suppliers include Hertel’s Meats, Pete’s Mountain Meats, Fluer Smokery, Forest For Dinner, Circle Dairy, Mecca Tea, and French Press Coffee Roasters from Qualicum. The name Broken Bow (as in bow of a boat) was originated as a way to pay tribute to the area with so many boat shops and inlet vistas and there is a plan in place to renovate the back area to offer seating with beautiful views of the harbour.

Porto Taco – Port Alberni’s take on classic Mexican, featuring famous burritos, nachos, tacos, carnitas, salads and quesadillas. Perched between the Harbour Quay and Argyle St, Porto Taco has a funky vibe and authentic experience. All menu items are made from in house including the spicy chocolate cookies, mojitos and margaritas. This is the perfect stop for a summer happy hour beverage and snack. Porto Taco is only open seasonally so be sure to check in during the cooler months for re-opening dates.

Starboard Grill – Port Alberni’s exquisite dining patio! Located at the Harbour Quay, Starboard Grill has the most beautiful and expansive waterfront patio. Watch the boats come in and out of the harbour, waves crashing against the rocky shore or spot some westcoast wildlife while you enjoy your meal. The menu gives a range of seafood, burgers, specialty poutines, bowls and their famous candied salmon chowder. Grab a little dessert across the way at the Sugar Shak and take a stroll down the boardwalk after your meal to complete your dining experience.

Other honourable mentions to the list include Brie & Barrel, Grassroots, All Mex’d Up, Sugar Shak, Homestead Cookhouse and the famous Donut Shop. Dining out is good for your soul as well as your tummy and choosing to support locally owned and run establishments is a great way to pour back into our community and show pride in our town. When supporting these local businesses, you are also supporting the local suppliers where most source ingredients from. Enjoy tastes from around the world right here in our hometown.
